How is ParkBySMS different from other mobile payment systems around the world?
In short, the main difference is in performance, where ParkBySMS has a tremendous advantage over competing solutions. SMS parking payment systems have been implemented in many world cities over the last decade. Just about all of these solutions, however, suffer from mediocre performance due to comlicated end-user processes. Because these systems usually require on-line registration and the use of credit cards or prepaid cards, or the sending of multiple SMS messages with a complicated message format, their adoption rate is discouragingly low. We don't know of anywhere in the world where such system has been implemented and enjoys more than 15% market share. In sharp contrast, wherever our approach has been implemented (in just a few world cities, most notably Sofia and Belgrade), 85% to 90% of all parking payments are SMS payments.
The reason that ParkBySMS enjoys enormous success wherever it has been implemented is that it presents the simplest possible method to pay for parking time. ParkBySMS offers a direct-billing solution, where the client sends their license plate number as an SMS message to a dedicated short number, tariffed at whatever the cost of 1 hour of parking time is for the area. The mobile operator charges the client for value-added SMS service and transfers the money to the municipality or the parking operator. Controlling officers then use hand-held PDA devices to make checks and call for appropriate sanctions if there is a violation. ParkBySMS also goes a step further by offering the option of using additional technology (such as GPS tracking, embedded parking sensors or visual input from on-street cameras) to control and audit the work of the controlling officerse themselves, thus ensuring unusually high collection rates.
Another major technical advantage is that ParkBySMS is extremely flexible, extensible, scalable and easy to maintain. The system has been working without any major failures since 2007; has been tested with vast numbers of daily transactions; can easily be extended to support multiple parking zones with unlimited number of parking spaces, including zones with different tariffs; and has been shown to smoothly integrate with any existing or new IT systems, such as accounting software, parking management software, public-facing front-ends, etc.
